Gurley Satterfield was a uniquely gifted man. His way with words made him a great communicator. His favorite topic of conversation was the Bible, his constant companion for life. His love of the Lord was present in all his endeavors. He never passed up an opportunity to talk about his Savior and his church. Even when his health declined and he was limited with daily routines, he never left his church. Listening to sermons and Christian music were some of his favorite past times. Every year he produced a garden that would be the envy of many. Working with the soil was a delight to him. His favorite title was Papaw, and he was a great one! His words of wisdom to his grandchildren will be forever etched in their minds and on their hearts. Gurley was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ruthie Satterfield and brothers Paul, Edward, Eston, and Grady Satterfield. He is survived by his wife, Idell Satterfield, his faithful companion for more than sixty years; two sons, Alan (Susan) and Ronnie (Melanie); three grandchildren, Matt, Drew, and Emily Satterfield, and a sister, Edith Hullender. He and Idell have been dedicated members of New Bridge Baptist Church in Gainesville, where he served as a deacon. For many years he was the teacher of the Helping Hands Sunday School class. Prior to his retirement, he was the Director of Utilities for the city of Gainesville. Additionally, he was a Mason with the Chestatee Lodge, 102. Mostly, Gurley Satterfield was a man of character; his word was his bond. He loved his wife, his sons, and his grandchildren. His legacy to them is an example of how hard work, honesty, love of Christ and family, and community and church involvement will sustain them for life.
